Real English 17: The Language of Interests and Hobbies

I like

1. Pattern Discovery

When English speakers talk about hobbies, they often use these patterns:

🔷 Pattern A — I like…

  • I like reading.

  • I like football.

🔷 Pattern B — I’m interested in…

  • I’m interested in technology.

  • I’m interested in history.

🔷 Pattern C — I enjoy…

  • I enjoy cooking.

  • I enjoy traveling.

🔷 Pattern D — My favorite…is… (…

  • My favorite hobby is photography.

  • My favorite sport is badminton.

Pattern Insight

Don’t memorize hundreds of hobby sentences. Learn a few powerful patterns, then change only the activity.

2. Pattern Fuel

Pattern.

Hobbies

3. Pattern Build

✍️ Step 1 — Complete the patterns

  • I like __________________.

  • I like __________________.

  • I’m interested in __________________.

  • I’m interested in __________________.

  • I enjoy __________________.

  • I enjoy __________________.

  • My favorite hobby is __________________.

  • My favorite hobby is __________________.

✍️ Step 2 — Make your own sentences

Write five true sentences about yourself.

1)……………………………………………………….

2)……………………………………………………….

3)……………………………………………………….

4)……………………………………………………….

5)……………………………………………………….

4. Pattern Expansion

       Level 1: I like music.

Level 2: I like listening to music.

Level 3: I like listening to music after work.

Level 4: I like listening to music because it helps me relax.

📌 Now you try:

I enjoy cooking.

↓ I enjoy cooking with _________________________________.

↓ I enjoy cooking with _________________________________ and _________________________________.

5. Pattern Evolution

  • Basic: I like reading.

  • Add Frequency: I usually read before bed.

  • Add Reason: I like reading because I learn new ideas.

  • Combine Patterns: I like reading, and I usually read every evening because it helps me relax.

Key Insight:

Natural English grows one small idea at a time.

6. Pattern Family

Different patterns express different strengths.

  • Basic: I like reading.

  • Better: I enjoy reading.

  • Natural: I’m interested in literature.

  • Richer: I love reading.

Notice: like (common), enjoy (more expressive), be interested in (focus on curiosity), love (very strong feeling).

7. Natural English

Native speakers often shorten these expressions:

  • “I’m interested in…” sounds like: I’m innerested in…

  • “I like it.” often sounds like: I likeit.

🎧 Listening Tip:

Don’t expect every word to sound separate. Native speakers connect words together naturally.

8. Real Conversation

Situation 1 — Meeting Someone

  • A: What do you do for fun?

  • B: I enjoy reading and traveling because they help me learn new things and I can relax.

Situation 2 — Making Friends

  • A: What are you interested in?

  • B: I’m interested in technology, and I like learning new things about computers.

  • A: Really? Me too!

(Read both conversations aloud three times).

9. 60-Second Speaking Challenge

Talk about your hobbies for one minute.

  • What you like to do

  • What you are interested in

  • Why you enjoy these things

  • How often you do them

Rules:

         ❌ Do not write.

         ❌ Do not translate.

          ✅ Just speak.

10. Pattern Reflection

Before moving to Lesson 18, ask yourself:

[ ] Can I talk about my hobbies naturally?

         [ ] Can I describe my interests?

[ ] Can I ask other people about theirs?

         [ ] Can I explain why I enjoy something?

[ ] Can I combine several patterns into one answer?

🌱 Key Lesson Insight

Today you learned that talking about hobbies is not about difficult vocabulary. It is about combining simple English patterns naturally. The more patterns you connect, the more naturally you can express yourself.
